1 EARLY DEVELOPMENT The RNLI inflatable rescue boat from which the RIB developed THE FIRST STEPS on the road to developing rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) were taken when we were trying to solve a problem. During the 1960s there was a growing number of casualties around Britain’s coasts involving small boats, surfers and swimmers, and the large all-weather lifeboats were not well-suited to rescue work. The lifeboat society in France (Societé Nationale de Sauvetage en Mer) had introduced the flat-bottomed inflatable boat as a small rescue craft that could operate off open beaches.

Thirst Aid, another of John Caulcutt’s racing RIBs Psychedelic Surfer – the racing RIB that set the pattern for the Atlantic 21 Students launching the RNLI Atlantic 21 at the College Psychedelic Surfer had demonstrated that a RIB with a higher length/beam ratio worked better in waves than the shorter boats. But while these prototype designs held together under the strain of operating in waves, the best solution for a rescue RIB design emerged slowly; the addition of a deep vee hull increased the draft of the boat, which required long shaft outboard engines.

The main feature of this design is the tube, which extends only roughly halfway along the sides of the hull from the stern. This still provides stability at rest and fendering when coming alongside, but the weight and cost are considerably reduced. Willard Marine in the US offers a similar system on its fast interceptor RIBs. A small catamaran RIB suitable for both leisure and commercial use RIBs were not designed to fly voluntarily, although they sometimes do when driven to excess. In Italy, however, one enterprising designer produced a real flying RIB.
