Angell, Cavan, and Ranck Two studies of families following the Great Depression in the US are considered the cornerstones of family stress theory. Robert Angell (1936), a sociologist from the University of Michigan, studied the experience of 50 families in the US in the 1930s and developed the earliest published scholarly work about families coping with stress.
