Soon Confucius himself became sick and did not recover. On April 11, 479 BCE, Confucius died at age 73. His students held a funeral for him. Many people came, including Duke Ai of Lu. After the funeral, his students continued to mourn him for 3 years, as they would do for their own parents. When the 3-year period was over, and other students left, Zigong built a hut next to Confucius’s tomb and mourned for additional 3 years. Later, a number of Confucius’s students as well as a few other people of Lu built their homes near Confucius’s tomb and formed a Confucian neighborhood.

Thinking that he didn’t give his son enough while receiving support from him, Confucius often felt guilty. Only one year after the death of his own son, his most favorite student Yan Hui died at the young age of 41.
