All these facets of experiencing cannot be left aside when psychological inquiry focuses on studying experiences, nor can one be exempt from taking into account both the synchronic and diachronic dimensions interacting in their shaping. PSYCHOLOGICAL (MEDIATIONAL) DESCRIPTION OF EXPERIENCES The first task of the psychological study of experience is the description of its varieties. But as said before, experiences are fleeting and can only get some kind of permanence as an object when recorded. Experiences appear in the consciousness of the experiencer.

Thus reflexivity is first of all about reflections over impressions that stem from sensation. This is exactly what empirical psychology was about in the eighteenth century in Northern Europe. At that time psychology was a part of metaphysics and in this sense inseparable from philosophy. Yet Kant (1787/1929) banished empirical psychology from metaphysics, and this was very much followed up by his successors in philosophy. In this period it was not psychology that freed itself from Reflexivity in the History of Psychology 13 philosophy, but rather the opposite, that philosophy tried to get rid of psychology because empirical psychology represented the basis for reflexivity.

It will go, first, into the examination of human experience and, then, into a discussion of the methodological strategies used for the explanation of experiencing. It is sometimes thought that the human mind reflects (or/and refracts) the realities it faces. This view, sometimes mocked as the “Dogma of the Immaculate Perception,” seems to take for granted that experience is the human capability of reaching for the knowledge of the real—the Reality. If we were to follow the beliefs of naïve realists, we would take human experience to be transparent and able to present things as they are, so that (in a simplistic interpretation of Descartes’ view) in order to reach God’s point of view (the true knowledge about the real) the only thing needed is to find the right rational method to distinguish between the true and the false.
