After the fort closed down in 1854 it stood vacant for a time. Then in 1858 the remains of the fort became a way station for the Southern Overland Mail line. At that time there were the ruins of forty or fifty buildings still in evidence. The powder magazine, which had been constructed of stone, had escaped the fires, and it had been taken over as the company store. The stables also were still usable. A small community built up around the way station, and by 1880 around 500 people lived in the area.

All these happenings are very common in the realm of the supernatural. When ghosts become a part of a household they are seldom harmful, except in extreme situations. Most of them are prone to be both protective and benevolent. They DO want to be noticed! In the extreme cases, when a spirit appears to be demonic or evil or becomes a source of "dark, negative energy," in the language of students of the paranormal, then a priest or clergyman may be called to perform an exorcism. This is done only in very rare cases, as most ministers do not care to become involved in such rituals.
