5 Heat flow in the solid workpiece: theory It will be evident that convectional effects in the weld pool will modify the temperature distribution in the solid plate as compared with that obtained in an isotropic medium. In addition, it must be borne in mind that latent heat is absorbed at the forward edge of the weld pool and liberated at the rear, and that the physical properties governing heat flow, thermal conductivity and diffusivity, vary with temperature. Thus, analytical solutions of the energy equation assuming a point or line heat source will only give an approximation to the actual temperature distribution.
