Certain arc-melting experiments were tried with higher indium contents but were unsuccessful because th2 indium metal boiled before the temperature that was needed t o melt the zirconium was reached. For the present, attention w i l l be given mainly t o the higher zirconium alloys, and only occasional experiments with diffusion cans or with master alloys w i l l be attempted t o find a satisfactory method of making alloys with more than 35 at, % indium.

The best method found for preparing alloys that contain the AgZr, or AgZr phases i s t o polish by hand and t o chemically etch the surface with one of the following reagents: 1% HF + 49% glycerine + 50% HNO,, 1% HF + 1% HF + 49% glycerine + 50% acetic 49% glycerine + 50% alcohol, acid. The use of an acetic acid swabbing during and after etching reduces the amount of general staining. preparations are now being made t o run a series of heating and cooling curves in t h i s region. The thermal analysis ingots w i l l be arc melted a number of times and then heated for long periods of time t o make them uniform i n composition.
