Campbell 2003, 297) Schoenberger’s (1991) observations counter the second wave feminist assumptions that there is a singular, known and essential identity of ‘man’ or ‘woman’ and that this identity would be given priority in any interview situation. It is a position most famously articulated in a 1981 paper by Anne Oakley. Here the author initiated a spirited attack against the ‘proper interview’, arguing against conventional approaches to interviewing which assert that there must be a split between subject and object, an hierarchical relationship between interviewer and interview and an interviewer who is distant and uninvolved (Oakley 1981, 51).
Concurrently, this natural environment is tough, rough and rugged and needs to be tamed. The symmetries between social constructions of rurality and masculinity are thus exploited by the beer advertisers. The same crossover is evident in the military texts examined by Woodward (1998; 2000). Woodward (1998; 2000) explains that it does not matter that most British military operations are ‘far removed from the uplands and heathlands’ which feature so prominently in textual representations of the military, for these rural images powerfully convey a masculinity of independence, strength and adventure.
This was not the case with women. Women cannot be ‘good’ farmers for they have no embodied relationship with the land. This positioning of women is solidiﬁed by discourses that suggest that, compared with men, women’s bodies are deﬁcient and lack the capacity for the physical and technical work of farming. When women do farm alone they are dismissed as not ‘real’ farmers for utilizing male help and/or for failing to subscribe to normative deﬁnitions of femininity. 26 Masculinities and Management in Agricultural Organizations Worldwide The dynamic nature of farming identities, and the relationship between identity change and broader material and discursive shifts in society, are themes also worked through by Australian rural sociologist Lia Bryant (1999).
