By 1656 the Foreign Tongues Secretariatship had effectively been taken over by Andrew Marvell, while Milton, in deference to his classical learning, still held prominence regarding important communications in Latin (Marvell would replace Milton as the Latinist in 1657). Marvell had become Milton’s assistant three years earlier, and their subsequent relationship is enshrined in the folklore of literary biography.
