The process is thought (Mann and Frankel, 1989; Schuler and Frankel, 1999) to involve (i) reductive uptake of iron from the surrounding environment and its membrane transport; (ii) transport of iron, perhaps as ferritin, to and across the magnetosome membrane; (iii) precipitation of hydrated Fe(III) oxide within the magnetosome vesicles, and (iv) phase transformation of the amophous Fe(III) phase – most likely ferrihydrite – to magnetite, both during the nucleation phase and during surface-controlled growth of the crystallite.
