He wanted to hurry home where he could wash and say grace at the table and eat this treat. The women weren’t done talking, though. Now they were discussing where to find the finest cloth imported from England. Mohan listened a few moments. Soon he began staring at a street sweeper. The old man dodged back and forth between carts and shoppers, his back bowed with age and the weight of stinking garbage in his pail. With his trowel, he scooped cow and donkey droppings off the dirt road, rotting scraps from the food stalls, and litter too slimy to identify.

Mohan sat down cross-legged and tried to remember if he had ever talked with his father alone. The house was always full of family, friends and guests, brothers, cousins, and businessmen. Mohan could barely breathe as his father ordered the servant to bring tea and sweets for two. Bapu slowly eased himself to the mat on the other side of the desk. “The English, you ask,” he began. “The English. ” He took a deep breath. “They are clever, these English. They worked their way into our society. We Indians have an ancient culture, but we did not see what the newcomers were doing.

Kasturbai nodded. “You will rub my feet before we go to bed,” he said. Kasturbai nodded again. Mohan grinned to himself. Being a husband was going to be fun. “Kasturbai—” he began again, but she interrupted. “If you do not mind,” she said, “I should go to the women’s side of the house. I must wash the dirt of the road from my body. ” She looked at him out of the corner of her eye. ” Mohan felt cheated. “Very well,” he said. “Go. ” He watched her swish out of the door. Her body was so graceful in her sari, he thought.
