As well intentioned as many of the militias were, and in many cases movingly so, it was unlikely that the Republican army based on decentralized militias could match the professionals of the Army of Africa, the Spanish Foreign Legion and the units of the Moroccan regulars who comprised the Nationalist armed forces, not to mention the Falangist, Carlist and CEDA militias. On the battlefield, and in logistics and supply, Nationalist Spain functioned as a system geared to the military.
