Such a victim of a bind m ay then be unable to untangle the different levels of message sent outside the family, or to attribute meaning to their own feelings. Such a victim may then show the dissociation of feelings from thoughts that characterizes 'schizophrenia'. This view of the causation of schizophrenia was extended by Theodore Lidz ( 1 963) who defined what a healthy 'essential dynamic structure of the family' might look like. Lidz, who also anticipates some of the worst normative structural notions of ideal family functioning, argues that it i s t h e failure o f the family properly t o define gender roles a n d t o maintain a distinction between generations in the family which gives rise to problems.

There is an issue here which flows from the turn from individuals to family interaction, to what could be termed in more mainstream psychi atric j argon a 'family interaction' model (Siegler and Osmond , 1977) . This concerns Laing's relationship with psychoanalysis. On the one hand the work on family interactions drew on systems theory. We had 'systems' or 'structures' which were faulty, and we heard the cries of help from the victims of those systems. This approach owes little to Freud, and Laing was taken by many of his supporters and critics to be hostile to psychoanalysis.

Eclectic practitioners using cognitive approaches have also been able to take techniques and use them in a postmodern spirit in a mix-and-match fashion as part of self-help without subscribing to any correct underlying model . Each of these ostensibly radical forms of knowledge is so heavily conditioned by what it opposes, marked by it, that it folds very quickly into a form of psychiatric practice itself when it is tempted or put under pressure to do so . Nevertheless, in line with the deconstructive argument that you have to use the 'stones of the house' to attack a dominant system , we will be drawing cautiously and selectively, radically and transforma tively upon these oppositional forms of knowledge in later chapters.
