Surprisingly, the contrasts and trade-offs between the two approaches have received little attention. Early DSS theory and practice (for example, Gerrity, 1971) emphasized customized systems that were intended to direct changes in the way decisions were made. More recently, however, nondirective DSS that provide decision makers with flexibility and control over changes in the decision-making process (see Sprague, 1980) have been more popular. Indeed, it can be argued that off-the-shelf DSS packages are becoming more commonplace than customized DSS and that this trend will continue to favor nondirected systems over directed ones.
