Even as a young child, Daisy was curious and asked a lot of questions. ” she asked the general. “It was shot off in battle,” he said. Daisy asked if the Yankees had shot it off. ” exclaimed Daisy proudly. “Well, I s’pose my papa did it. ” Although the general didn’t seem to be offended, Mrs. Gordon hurried her daughter from the room. After the surrender, the families of Confederate officers were required to leave Savannah. General Sherman arranged for safe passage across enemy lines for the Gordons.

There was great love between Daisy’s parents, and the Gordons were a warm, high-spirited, close-knit family, where individual differences were encouraged. William Gordon, Daisy’s father, was an honest, loyal man with an excellent sense of humor. He was a good husband and father. Although Daisy loved both of her parents, she had a special relationship with her father. Daisy’s mother was very direct with her children. Once in a letter to Daisy, she commented on her daughter’s bad spelling. “One more scolding before I finish up,” she wrote.

Students had to wear long black aprons over their dresses, and there were many strict rules. The girls were not allowed on the street alone. To exercise, they promenaded in pairs up Madison Avenue, always under the watchful eye of a teacher. For the most part Daisy behaved very well. But one time she and some other girls got into a snowball fight, and they were kept in for three days as punishment. Daisy studied hard and wrote letters home in French. Mabel and Arthur had a French governess and had learned French along with English.
