Chavannes* translation indicates that the limbs of the dwarfs were scattered after they had been killed. The gesture with the sleeve, found in only one of the seven versions o f this interview, is an additional ceremonial act by Confucius, to indicate his displeasure at the course o f events. Granet notices that in none of the seven versions does Confucius mount to the highest step, which was reserved for princes. The whole incident indicates the triumph of Confucius at this meet­ ing, through strict adherence to ceremonial.
