Soon Confucius himself became sick and did not recover. On April 11, 479 BCE, Confucius died at age 73. His students held a funeral for him. Many people came, including Duke Ai of Lu. After the funeral, his students continued to mourn him for 3 years, as they would do for their own parents. When the 3-year period was over, and other students left, Zigong built a hut next to Confucius’s tomb and mourned for additional 3 years. Later, a number of Confucius’s students as well as a few other people of Lu built their homes near Confucius’s tomb and formed a Confucian neighborhood.
