To this day, authorities have found the bodies of only a few of the missing civilians. Argentines call them los desaparecidos (the disappeared). A member of the military junta, General Leopoldo Galtieri, became president in 1982. Galtieri attempted to direct Argentines’ attention away from their country’s problems by invading the Falkland Islands in 1982. These islands, claimed by both the United Kingdom and Argentina, are located about 300 miles (480 kilometers) off the Argentine coast. Great Britain had occupied this tiny outpost, where sheep far outnumber people, since 1833.

One area of high population density was in the northern forests and highlands. Here, the Guaraní people practiced slash-and-burn farming. To make space for settlements and crops, farmers would cut down trees and set fires to clear areas of plants. The ash fertilized crops, which included corn, cassava (manioc), and sweet potatoes. Settlements were small, with 50 to 100 individuals living in a 31 32 Argentina community. When the land became infertile, the community moved to another unoccupied site.

When the land became infertile, the community moved to another unoccupied site. Other areas of high population density were in the Northwest, in the low Andean valleys along the eastern edge of the altiplano, and in the Andean piedmont basins farther south. Several indigenous groups lived in this area in permanent settlements. They developed trade connections with one another. The most advanced group was the Huarpe; they lived in Cuyo, a basin and range area in the Andean piedmont. The towns of Mendoza and San Juan are located there today.
