Although a number of these beam-transport elements have been constructed, none has as yet been used in a beam-transport system. Consequently, system reliability has yet to be demonstrated. The possibility of superconducting beam-transport magnets for NAL is under study. The experimental area at NAL would require approximately 50 MW of power for conventional magnets. e ACCELERATOR MAGNETS Pulsed superconducting magnets show sufficient promise that design studies for high-energy accelerators have incorporated them.

Stress-strain curves for both densities are plotted in Fig. 4. Since polystyrene-foam specimens fractured on cooling to 4°K at the foam-epoxy joint, only data obtained at 200K and above are presented. It should again be pointed out that considerably reduced specimen dimensions were necessary to produce fracture within the foams at 20°K. Test results at 195°K were obtained using both powdered dry ice and dry ice-ethyl alcohol mixture data. These are properly identified in Fig. 4. Most of the spread of data represents material or specimen inconsistency.
